Welcome to the Fashion Unearthed podcast. If you need help navigating the fashion industry sustainably, you have come to the right place. I'm your host Belinda Humphrey and my hope is to simplify the fashion industry so that businesses can make the best decisions for people, planet and product.

Hello, and welcome to episode 50 of the Fashion Unearthed podcast. This week, I really just wanted to give a tip on a simple way to think about circular design. I know in fashion, there's lots of jargon that gets used and I think sometimes it just complicates things and stops people from getting started. And at the moment with the circular economy and circular design, really becoming popular and talked about a lot more in the mainstream I know some times people are like, well, that's a whole other thing I have to learn about and understand. So today I just wanted to give you a quick tip on what to think about when you're designing a range or putting your product together to help you align and think about circular design principles.

Essentially, I want you to ask yourself, what would nature do? Nature is the ultimate circular designer, nothing goes to waste and once things have reached the end of life, they can return to the soil. So when you're thinking about what inputs you want to use or making choices about the materials, you want to think about what's in those materials, how it's been combined, what treatments or finishes might have done throughout the whole creation process and what happens to it when it, in a sense, returns to the soil.

And just to extend my nature analogy, nature does all this very slowly. It's not in a rush. It knows its plan. It's very measured and just plods along. So really allow yourself enough time to think through those decisions upfront and ask yourself, "what would nature do?"
